TUC's College of Pharmacy supports six pharmacy residencies situated at various major health care institutions in the Bay Area.
A pharmacy residency is a paid post-PharmD training program that offers additional, higher-level clinical training if you are interested in exploring a wider variety of pharmacy career options.

Lifelong Medical Care – PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice / Ambulatory Care Focus
Oakland, California
Description
Lifelong Medical Care is a Federally Qualified Health Center that provides high-quality health, dental, and social services to underserved people of all ages; creates models of care for the elderly, people with disabilities and families; and advocates for continuous improvements.
Purpose
The Post Year 1 (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency at LifeLong Medical Care & Touro University California College of Pharmacy (TUC COP) aims to use the knowledge and skills learned during the Doctor of Pharmacy education to prepare advanced practice pharmacists in the primary care setting. By the end of this residency, the pharmacist will be able to practice as a highly qualified independent practitioner in a variety of primary care settings.
Program Overview
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency offers 2 positions and is a 12 month postgraduate curriculum that offers an emphasis in ambulatory care by providing a longitudinal ambulatory care core experience at LifeLong Medical Care. In addition, the resident is offered (3) six week elective rotations at one of our affiliated Bay Area hospitals or clinics.
During their time at LifeLong Medical Care, the residents will work closely with Dr. Khosraviani to help manage patient’s chronic disease states such as Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. The residents will work under a collaborative practice agreement allowing pharmacists to order medications and labs in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and physician assistants. They will also be involved in point of care A1c and blood glucose testing, in home health visits with social workers, teaching health and wellness education for patients, medication reconciliation, and lifestyle modification counseling.
Each week, residents will spend 2-3 days rounding with preceptors and providers to treat patients, 2 days conducting teaching or volunteer activities, and 1 day working on research projects. Upon completion of this residency, the resident will be awarded an ASHP accredited residency certificate, in addition to a teaching certificate.
Rotation Schedule
The residents will complete a longitudinal 12 month ambulatory care core rotation at LifeLong Medical Care, in addition to (3) six week elective rotations and 4 weeks of dedicated project time.
- Electives: The residents will complete their electives at any of the TUC associated Bay Area Hospitals and Clinics. There is a wide array of learning experiences to choose from depending on the residents’ interests. Elective options include:
- Infectious Disease
- Critical Care
- Trauma
- Emergency Medicine
- Psychiatry (ambulatory care)
- HIV/Hepatitis
- Oncology (both ambulatory and acute care)
- Transitions of Care
- Academia
- Primary care at other TU affiliated clinic
- Anti-coagulation clinic
Teaching Certificate
The residents will participate in a longitudinal teaching certificate program offered through TUC COP. Residents will have the opportunity to deliver didactic lectures, precept small group discussions, participate in the pharmacy lab and student run free clinics, and develop a teaching portfolio. Upon completion of the program, the residents will receive a formal teaching certificate.
Research Training
TU COP offers a formal research training program for the TUC COP residents. Monthly seminars are conducted to facilitate the progress of the resident’s research project. By the end of the 12 months, residents are fully prepared for Western States and manuscript submission.
Salary and Benefits
The residents will be awarded similar benefits as the TUC COP practicing faculty, with access to library, statistical software, and laptop privileges.
- Salary: roughly $48,000 annually paid twice monthly
- Insurance: Medical/Dental/Vision plan offered
- Vacation/Sick Leave: two weeks paid vacation with sick leave
- Professional leave: to be used for conference attendance and/or job/PGY2 residency interviews
Travel Stipend
The residents are provided with a stipend to support travel, lodging, and registration fees for the purposes of professional conferences. The residents are expected to attend either CSHP Annual Seminar or ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, in addition to Western States Conference at the end of the residency year.

OLE Health – PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice / Ambulatory Care

Description
OLE Health is a Federally Qualified Health Center in Napa, California and the primary site for the residency training. At OLE Health, majority of our patients are low-income, uninsured and Spanish speaking workers that have not historically received high quality of care at other institutions. To optimize care, pharmacist are truly integrated into the patient management.
Purpose

During their time at OLE Health, the resident will work closely with Dr. Jalloh to help manage patient’s chronic disease states such as Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus, essential hypertension, dyslipidemia, depression, gout, benign prostatic hyperplasia, erectile dysfunction, neuropathy, and smoking cessation. Residents will develop personal relationships with patients to help optimize their medication therapy with a significant level of autonomy. Each week, residents will spend 2-3 days rounding with preceptors and providers to treat patients, 2 days conducting teaching or volunteer activities, and 1 day working on research projects. Upon completion of this residency, the resident will be awarded an ASHP accredited residency certificate, in addition to a teaching certificate.

Alameda Health System (AHS) – Highland Hospital is located in Oakland, California with the county's only Level 1 Trauma center. Highland Hospital serves as a training facility for four accredited medical training programs in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Purpose
- PGY-1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
- Graduates of the AHS PGY1 Pharmacy Program will be ideal candidates for a clinical pharmacist specialist position in either inpatient acute care of ambulatory care, success in a PGY2 residency, and as an adjunct faculty position.
Learning Experiences
The pharmacy residency program offers a wide variety of patient care activities with the goal of providing experiential learning in acute care medicine and ambulatory care pharmacy practice. Typical learning experiences are 4-6 weeks in length or are longitudinal. Additionally, three 4-week elective rotation experiences are chosen by the resident.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center – PGY-1 - Pharmacy Residency – Academic Track

Description
The PGY1 Residency Program is a one-year postgraduate program that provides training and experience in the provision of pharmaceutical care and quality medication education to a diverse patient population in various areas of pharmacy practice.
The goals of the program are to foster development of leadership, professional education, and comprehensive clinical practice skills such that residents will become effective and marketable pharmaceutical care providers in a variety of practice settings. This program advocates the collaborative approach to problem-solving by its leadership and management, and the residents will be encouraged and challenged to use this strategy of teamwork to solve real-life practice situations as they arise. These goals will be achieved through experience acquired by completing rotations in ambulatory care and inpatient settings, precepting pharmacy students, researching and presenting the results of a year-long research project, and participating in multiple interdisciplinary committees.

Description
NorthBay Healthcare is a private, not for profit, independent healthcare system in Solano County consisting of two community hospitals, multiple primary and specialty care clinics and a Cancer Center. NorthBay prides itself on the ability to provide compassionate care, advanced medicine, close to home for all residents of Solano County. The Department of Pharmacy supports the medication management aspect of this mission with a highly trained group of clinical pharmacists that collaborate with the medical, nursing and supportive staff to optimize pharmacotherapy.
Residents focus their training on the goal of becoming a well-rounded clinical pharmacist proficient in the delivery of comprehensive pharmacotherapeutic care in the acute care setting. Core rotations include: adult general medical & surgical, intensive care, pharmacy administration, and anticoagulation clinic. A variety of elective rotations are also offered such as infectious disease, cardiology, oncology and transitions of care. Residents in the program also have the opportunity to obtain a teaching certificate through an elective academic longitudinal rotation with Touro University. All residents have the opportunity to precept pharmacy interns from the University of the Pacific, Touro University, and University of California, San Francisco.
